In the ever-evolving world of building automation, consistency and expertise are key. Few embody those values better than Daniel Dunn, Senior Building Management System (BMS) Engineer at Setpoint Solutions’ Dunedin branch. With nearly two decades of service under his belt, Daniel has grown from the new kid on-site to a calm, reliable mentor leading some of the company’s most innovative projects.
From the Army to Automation
Daniel’s journey to Setpoint Solutions wasn’t a straight line. Originally an electrician by trade, he worked at Fisher & Paykel while also serving in the New Zealand Army Reserve. He took six months’ leave from Fisher & Paykel for a peacekeeping mission in the Solomon Islands. Upon returning, he discovered the factory had closed, and his job was gone. One email to Setpoint founder Mike Hormann sparked a conversation that would change the course of his career.
“I saw the job advertised and thought, why not? A few emails later, Mike asked me to come in. That was 17 years ago.”
A Day in the Life
Now a Senior BMS Engineer, Daniel’s typical day involves mentoring new technicians, troubleshooting advanced technical issues, and working on-site with the team. He’s not just managing systems—he’s building people up.
“My role has evolved a lot. I started by following others around. Now I run jobs and support the whole team. I like helping people out of a pickle. Fault finding is one of my strengths.”
Leading Cyber-Security Innovation
Daniel is currently working with colleague Bruce on one of New Zealand’s first deployments of BACnet Secure, a groundbreaking step in cyber security for building automation systems. With a test environment already established, the project is paving the way for smarter, safer building networks.
“BACnet Secure enhances how our control systems communicate securely. It’s a big deal for our industry, and it feels great to be on the cutting edge.”
People First, Always
What sets Setpoint Solutions apart, Daniel says, is being local and genuine connections with clients. “We’re approachable and have good relationships with our end users. That helps us deliver the best support and outcomes.”
Daniel’s work ethic reflects that same philosophy. “If I’m with a client, they get my full attention. I try to stay off my phone and be present. That’s how you build trust.”
A Calm Mentor and Reliable Teammate
His teammates would describe him as relaxed and approachable—the guy you can always go to with a question. He finds motivation in helping clients and coworkers succeed. “If they get across the line, then that’s awesome. That’s what drives me.”
Working in Remarkable Places
Seventeen years has brought many memorable moments. From working on projects in stunning Queenstown and Benmore to contributing to Setpoint’s long-standing partnership with Otago University, Daniel has seen and done it all. One standout? A trip to Antarctica with the Christchurch team.
“There have been so many good moments. Working away in cool places is definitely a highlight.”
Advice for the Next Generation
To anyone considering a role in building automation, Daniel offers simple but powerful advice: “Ask questions and be open to change. You’ll never stop learning in this industry.”
Life Outside of Setpoint
Away from the tools, Daniel is a family man with three kids who keep him on his toes. A lover of sports, he plays football and mountain bikes with his children. And his Army Reserve duties continue, taking him to Christchurch one weekend a month.
Daniel Dunn is more than a skilled engineer. He’s a mentor, a leader in building technology innovation, and a dedicated member of both his work and home communities. His journey reminds us that success in the BMS world isn’t just about systems—it’s about the people who power them.
