Setpoint is proud to support the protection of a South Island icon – the Jewelled Gecko
Sustainability goes much deeper here at Setpoint than all the great work we do to save clients energy usage. Being environmentally focused is something we pride ourselves on in all aspects of how we operate, it is at the heart of what we do.
So, when the opportunity to partner with the Department of Conservation to preserve and enhance one of New Zealand’s most distinctive herpetofauna species, the Jewelled Gecko came to our attention it felt meant to be.
We have been working alongside DOC for several years where the work is in areas that are home to important populations of this threatened gecko, which is currently classified under the DOC classification system as Gradual Decline (human induced).
The boost to conservation and research each year aims to save and protect future generations of the Jewelled Gecko and re-establish healthy and sustainable populations of this New Zealand icon.
Our support helps DOC focus on:
- On-going monitoring of key jewelled geckos populations
Surveying areas of potential habitat
Providing assistance to landowners to conserve jewelled gecko populations, by improving habitat and undertaking control of introduced predators - Establishing predator monitoring and control at gecko sites
Supporting efforts to translocate jewelled geckos into safe habitats
Supporting research and initiatives to increase community awareness and participation in jewelled gecko conservation - Many of our team have taken the opportunity to be involved in workdays at jewelled gecko sites where monitoring and habitat improvement is taking place, working alongside DOC staff and local volunteers alike.
The aim of the whole project is to increase awareness of this very special South Island species and to ensure its survival in an area it has long been associated with.
